Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dogs of Houston
-People Helping Dogs Helping People
PAWS is a reading program started in 2004 by a small team of B&BTD volunteers that were interested in encouraging reading at our local elementary schools. We currently serve two schools with a team of five at each location . We meet every Tuesday from 9:30-10:30 throughout the school year.
We know from experience that our dogs can put kids at ease when they read. Dogs don't judge whether children are good readers or not, and they don't embarrass them if they mispronounce a word or have a learning disability. Dogs are there to listen to the children as they practice their reading skills and sometime they lend a helping paw to help in the process.
Our members make it clear the children are reading to our four legged members. Humans are there only because it's a rule:). We sit on a blanket outside the designated classroom and rotate the students until they have all read to each dog . After they read , each student receives a laminated bookmark and is given a sticker photo of the dog they read too. We have fifth graders who still have their bookmark from kindergarten!
Sometimes, we find out that the children in our program go home and read to their own personal pets. We have heard stories about our emerging readers reading to their dogs, cats, turtles, frogs, iguanas , birds , hamsters, etc. They practice their reading skills and become better readers.
